As NFHA’s Chief AI Officer (CAIO), Dr. Michael Akinwumi leads the organization’s efforts to ensure technologies impacting the housing sector are fair, privacy-preserving, reliable, transparent, and controllable. He provides leadership in AI governance, risk management, and innovation to promote the ethical and effective use of AI in alignment with NFHA’s mission.

Dr. Akinwumi oversees the strategic and operational aspects of AI implementation and governance at NFHA, while also leading the organization’s work to advance the adoption of responsible AI principles across the public and private sectors. He works to ensure AI technologies and initiatives in housing are both innovative and compliant with relevant civil and human rights laws, policies, and regulations. He also collaborates with AI leaders across government and industry, including state and federal agencies, to develop and oversee AI strategies that advance fair housing and fair lending goals, promote innovation, eliminate bias, serve humanity, and mitigate risk.

Simultaneously, as an Eagleton Civic Science Fellow, Dr. Akinwumi is dedicated to shaping AI governance frameworks for policymakers. Drawing on his background in advanced mathematics and statistical machine learning, he is developing an LLM-centric guidance document for state legislators to help inform AI policy and align regulation with industry best practices.

Before joining NFHA, Dr. Akinwumi’s work focused on governance engineering, recommender systems, and machine learning solutions across sectors including fintech, banking, and insurance. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Alberta.
